Book Review: E-Newsletters that work
Posted Friday, September 27, 2002
Snuggling up with a good ebook is just not that exciting, so I printed out a copy. I knew I would need it for reference. Michael Katz’ ebook is 74 pages of answering all your questions about how and what to do to build an effective and successful E-Newsletter.
Without dwelling on the technical, he focuses on the importance of content, consistency and being genuine. The book reads like a sage with worlds of experience answering the questions of a new E-Newsletter enthusiast. The tone is straightforward and factual without being overly professorial. He gives the would-be editors a concise and direct walk through the likely problems, challenges and failures facing the E-Newsletter publisher.
Having published newsletters in one form or another for 35 years now, I was especially impressed by his recommendation to focus on the content and the reader and just talk to them. That is some unusual advice in today’s world where every marketing guru tends to focus on gimmicks, hyperbole and statistics. Sections included in the book are Content- What do I write; Content – how do I write; Formatting and Layout; and Delivery and List Management. The book also includes two appendixes, outsourcing and launch checklist. This book is more than just a guide to get a small business started with a quality E-Newsletter, it includes wisdom and ideas that a lot of current flashy E-Newsletter editors could take to heart.
